“Cutting the strings: beyond parachute science”

Rather than focusing on how to recruit or integrate Indigenous peoples, tribal members, and traditional knowledge holders into a system of westernized science, this year’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Plenary will highlight research and information gathering that is conducted in parallel to academic and agency efforts. Speakers will discuss the ways in which their work is integrally tied to local communities, how they “home grow” scientists and traditional knowledge holders, and their various experiences related to working with visiting scientists. Funding for this session was provided by California Sea Grant.
